John Falconer

John Falconer is a scholar specialising in the Visual Arts of South Asia.

Until his retirement in 2017, John was for a number of years Head of the Visual Arts Section of the British Library. In this capacity he managed the the Library’s outstanding collections of prints, drawings and photographs from South Asia. His particular specialism is 19th-century photography in Asia and he has published extensively in this field. He has also curated exhibitions of historical photography from Asia, both in the United Kingdom and in India, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

He continues to travel extensively in the subcontinent, both for pleasure and in relation to his research interests in Asian photography, architecture and archaeology.
