Shitanshu's story

Shitanshu Gupt Maurya designed his own modular training programme and spent five months (June–November 2019) working with two UK mentors.

Shitanshu’s work moves between sculpture and installation art; his mentors in 2019 were Professor Andrew Burton from the Fine Art department of the School of Arts and Cultures, Newcastle University, and the renowned English ceramic artist/sculptor, Sandy Brown, who is based in Devon.

Always positive and ever resourceful, Shitanshu won over the members of the Fine Art Faculty; after his residency in Devon had ended, Shitanshu returned to Newcastle to install his show in the university’s gallery. During his stay in the UK, Shitanshu visited almost all major galleries and museums. He was also lucky enough to attend the opening of the British Ceramics Biennale (BCB) in Stoke on Trent; Andrew Burton’s work was included the BCB exhibition and Shitanshu was clearly impressed by the range and quality of the work that he saw in Stoke – in the heart of the England’s famous potteries.
